She and her husband raised two daughters in Orlando where she worked as a capacity planner in the cellular industry. She was able to keep her hand in art through volunteering with Girl Scouts and teaching beginning clay classes two nights a week.  In 2021 she and her husband moved to Fernandina Beach and she retired from her corporate job to start her own pottery business. She makes functional pottery and also enjoys creating sculptures with a whimsical element. DESCRIPTION:Folkston Elementary School Lake  |  Saturday\, June 6  |  8-11:30 AM  |  FREE \nFriends of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is hosting its 7th Annual Youth Fishing Derby on Saturday\, June 6\, 2026 from 8:00 am to 11:30 am. The purpose of this derby is to provide an opportunity for everyone to enjoy a fun\, outdoor recreational activity. The event is free and will be held at Folkston Elementary School Lake located behind Folkston Elementary School at 285 Little Phoebe Road\, Folkston\, 31537.\n\nParticipants must provide their own fishing pole\, stringer\, and bait for the derby. Registration will begin at 8 AM and fishing will start at 8:30 AM\, signaled by a bullhorn. Only one pole per person will be allowed in the water. Measurements and counts will start at 9:30 AM and will end at 10 AM. Awards will be presented to the winners beginning at 10:30 AM. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the top three winners of each of the following groups: Ages 3-6\, Ages 7-11\, Ages 12-15\, and Ages 16+ for the most fish caught\, in addition to one overall winner for the largest fish caught. Everyone is encouraged to drop a line in to see if they can reel in the catch of the day.\n\nSponsors and supporters for the event include Friends of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge\, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge\, Georgia Department of Natural Resources\, City of Folkston\, Charlton County Board of Education\, Okefenokee Chamber of Commerce\, Charlton County Fire Department\, and Charlton County Sheriff Office. This self-guided ride lets participants start whenever they choose and enjoy the route at their own pace. \nThe trail currently stretches 22 miles roundtrip\, running from St. Marys Waterfront Park to Crooked River State Park. Along the way\, comfort stations are available at Sweetwater Park on Point Peter Road and at the McIntosh Sugar Mill Ruins on GA Spur 40\, across from the Stimson Gate of Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. Restrooms and a bike repair station are available at the waterfront park. \nPlease note that portions of the trail system are still under development along the route. \nPick up a trail map at the St. Marys Welcome Center\, 400 Osborne Street\, or access one online at VisitStMarys.com/Maps-and-Documents. The SR-110 MSW Landfill is located on Georgia Highway 110 in southwest Camden County\, approximately 2.75 miles north of the intersection with Georgia Highway 40. 2750 GA-110\, Folkston\, Ga 31537. \nThe Kids Fishing Derby is supported by a Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GA-DNR) program that helps stock ponds across the state to promote youth fishing. According to GA_DNR Wildlife Resources Division\, “Fishing together with your child and family can build some powerful memories. Research shows that most people are introduced to fishing by a family member\, and most consider a family member to be their best fishing friend. \nParticipants should be their own fishing poles and chairs. Prizes will be awarded for long fish\, heaviest fish\, most fish caught\, and youngest angler. Challenge yourself to kayak the 7 miles from historic St. Marys\, Ga.\, to the DD Bartles Boat ramp in Fernandina Beach\, Fla. (Note the change in the finish line from previous years). \nThis year proceeds from the paddle will support Building Battle Buddies\,  a newly established veteran 501(c)(3) from Nassau County that trains and provides service dogs for veterans throughout Florida and Georgia. \nTo register\, visit www.paddleguru.com and select Cross the Line Paddle for Veterans 2026. Kayaks can be rented and delivered directly to the start line through Amelia Island Kayak Excursions or through other kayak companies in Nassau County. Together\, you’ll take the ferry from downtown St. Marys before exploring Cumberland Island’s Dungeness ruins (home to the famed Carnegie family)\, as well as the island’s maritime forest\, marshes\, and the longest stretch of undeveloped beach in Georgia. \nWhile this field trip is open to all ages\, please know you will walk more than five miles from one ferry stop to another\, some of it on loose sand on an undeveloped island. There will be plenty of water and snack breaks\, as well as time for lunch. This trip will happen rain or shine. DESCRIPTION:Crooked River State Park |  June 15-19\, 2026 |  $200 per camper \nCalling all campers ages 7 to 12! \n\nLooking for a way to brighten up your summer vacation? \nWell look no further than the Junior Ranger Camps at Crooked River State Park! \nThese camps are full of fun\, adventure\, and nature. Kids will get to see\, learn\, and experience our wonderful\, shared natural resources of Crooked River while building lifelong memories. Activities include hands-on experiences such as fishing \, hiking\, archery\, arts and crafts\, and much much more! \nCrooked River State Park will offer three 5-day Junior Ranger Camps at a cost of $200 per camper per week. \n\nJune 1-5\nJune 15-19\nAugust 17-21\n\nCamps run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.\, Monday through Friday. \nThey will also host a 3-day Junior Camper mini-camp the week following Independence Day\, on Wednesday through Friday\, July 8-10.
