Biennial Okefenokee Science Symposium at the College of Coastal Georgia

Explore the science, ecology, and conservation of one of the Southeast’s most remarkable natural landscapes during the Biennial Okefenokee Science Symposium, hosted by the College of Coastal Georgia in Brunswick on October 16 & 17, 2026.
The two-day event brings together researchers, students, conservation professionals, and community members to examine current research related to the Okefenokee Swamp ecosystem. The Academic Symposium on Friday, Oct. 16, will feature presentations and poster sessions covering topics including hydrology, ecology, biodiversity, wildlife, cultural history, and the human dimensions of the Okefenokee. The program begins at 8 a.m. with coffee and posters.
Featured keynote speakers include Dr. Reed Noss, conservation coordinator with the University of Florida Center for Landscape Conservation Planning and Chief Scientist of Conservation Science, Inc.; Dr. Ania Truszczynski, deputy director of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division; and Johnny Sabo, director and state forester of the Georgia Forestry Commission.
Field excursions to Okefenokee are planned for Saturday, Oct. 17.
The symposium is open to everyone interested in learning more about the Okefenokee and the science helping researchers and conservationists understand and protect this extraordinary wetland system and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
