Youth Fishing Derby for Friends of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge

Friends of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is hosting its 7th Annual Youth Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 6, 2026 from 8:00 am to 11:30 am. The purpose of this derby is to provide an opportunity for everyone to enjoy a fun, outdoor recreational activity. The event is free and will be held at Folkston Elementary School Lake located behind Folkston Elementary School at 285 Little Phoebe Road, Folkston, 31537.

Participants must provide their own fishing pole, stringer, and bait for the derby. Registration will begin at 8 AM and fishing will start at 8:30 AM, signaled by a bullhorn. Only one pole per person will be allowed in the water. Measurements and counts will start at 9:30 AM and will end at 10 AM. Awards will be presented to the winners beginning at 10:30 AM. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the top three winners of each of the following groups: Ages 3-6, Ages 7-11, Ages 12-15, and Ages 16+ for the most fish caught, in addition to one overall winner for the largest fish caught. Everyone is encouraged to drop a line in to see if they can reel in the catch of the day.

Concessions including snow cones and hot dogs will be available from the Chill Zone.
